Terms of Service

These terms set the ground rules for using Quotes.fm and explain the responsibilities that come with discovering, creating with, and sharing published quote content.

Last updated August 29, 2026

A clear agreement

By accessing or using quotes.fm and its related features (collectively, the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree, do not use the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains how information is handled and is incorporated into these Terms by reference.

1. Acceptance and eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, you may use the Service only with permission from a parent or legal guardian. If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to accept these Terms for that organization.

2. The Service

Quotes.fm provides a searchable and explorable catalog of published quotes, people, characters, and works. Current features may include public search, source and attribution records, related-content discovery, anonymous Likes, copying links, quote-card creation, downloads, and sharing tools. Public browsing does not currently require an account.

The Service remains under active development. Features, designs, records, URLs, limits, and availability may change as we improve the product and its underlying catalog.

3. Quotes, sources, and verification

Every quote in the public catalog has passed human review and is supported by a source record. That review may be performed by the Quotes.fm editorial team or based on a user-supplied source that we review and accept. Publication and any verification label mean that the record met our editorial requirements at the time of review; they are not a guarantee that the record can never be incomplete, disputed, or corrected.

Source records may distinguish a speaker, fictional character, performer, author, work, edition, occurrence, attribution claim, and evidence. These distinctions are provided for discovery and research. You should review the displayed source and any linked evidence before relying on a quote in journalism, scholarship, legal work, publishing, or another context where exact wording or attribution is material.

4. Permission to use the Service

Subject to these Terms, Quotes.fm grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable permission to access and use the Service for lawful personal, educational, editorial, or internal business purposes. This permission concerns access to the Service only; it does not transfer ownership of the Service or grant rights in any underlying quote, book, film, song, performance, image, trademark, or other third-party material.

5. Acceptable use

You may not:

  • use the Service in violation of law or another person’s rights;
  • interfere with, overload, disrupt, or attempt to compromise the Service or its connected systems;
  • bypass access controls, rate limits, security measures, or technical restrictions;
  • use automated access at a volume or in a manner that harms the Service, evades controls, or materially degrades access for others;
  • manipulate Like counts, impersonate a verifier, or misrepresent a quote’s verification or source status;
  • introduce malware, probe for vulnerabilities without authorization, or access non-public systems or data; or
  • copy, repackage, or redistribute a substantial portion of the catalog in a way that substitutes for the Service or violates applicable copyright, catalog-compilation, contract, or other rights.

Ordinary search-engine indexing and reasonable, non-harmful linking to public pages are not prohibited by this section.

6. Anonymous Likes

Anonymous Likes are lightweight expressions of interest, not votes on factual accuracy, rights ownership, or verification. Like counts may change when records are corrected, merged, removed, or when development data is reset. Clearing local site data may prevent the Service from recognizing Likes previously made from that browser.

7. Corrections, evidence, and other submissions

You may send us corrections, source references, evidence, feedback, or other material (“Submissions”). You retain any rights you hold in a Submission. You give Quotes.fm a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, reproduce, analyze, adapt, and display the Submission only as reasonably necessary to evaluate it, maintain an audit trail, improve the catalog, publish an accepted contribution, and operate the Service.

You represent that you have the right to provide the Submission and that it is accurate to the best of your knowledge. Do not send unlawful material, unnecessary personal information, confidential information belonging to another person, or copyrighted material beyond what is reasonably needed to identify and evaluate the source. Submission does not guarantee publication, verification, credit, or continued display. We may edit, reject, preserve, or remove a Submission in accordance with our editorial and legal obligations.

8. Intellectual property and rightsholders

Quotes.fm and its licensors retain their rights in the Service, including its software, interface, branding, original editorial text, and original visual templates. Authors, publishers, studios, performers, photographers, and other rightsholders retain their rights in underlying works and materials. Names and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Their appearance does not imply endorsement of Quotes.fm.

Except for the limited permission in these Terms, no license is granted by implication, estoppel, or otherwise. Availability of content on the Service does not mean that the content is free of copyright or other restrictions in every jurisdiction or for every use.

9. Quote cards, downloads, and sharing

The Service may let you create and download a visual card or share a quote through your device or a third-party platform. You are responsible for deciding whether your intended reproduction, publication, or other use is permitted by applicable law and any relevant license. Quotes.fm does not grant rights it does not own in the quoted text, attribution, work, image, or other third-party material. Keep source and attribution information intact where the feature includes it, and do not present a modified card as an official Quotes.fm verification record.

10. Third-party services and links

The Service may link to source pages, publishers, media providers, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, or other third-party services. Quotes.fm does not control and is not responsible for their content, security, availability, or privacy practices. Your use of a third-party service is governed by that service’s own terms and policies.

11. Availability, changes, and enforcement

We may add, change, limit, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service; correct, merge, dispute, or remove catalog records; and set or enforce reasonable usage limits. We may restrict access when we reasonably believe it is necessary to protect the Service, comply with law, address security or rights concerns, or respond to a material breach of these Terms. We do not promise that any feature or item will remain available indefinitely.

If you believe material on the Service infringes your rights, email support@quotes.fm with your contact information, identification of the material and its URL, the basis for your claim, and any supporting information. We may request additional details necessary to evaluate the notice.

12. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” Quotes.fm disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not warrant that every quote, source, attribution, recommendation, Like count, link, or generated card will be complete, current, or suitable for your intended use.

The Service is provided for discovery and general informational purposes. It is not legal, academic, publishing, licensing, or other professional advice. Nothing in these Terms excludes a warranty or consumer right that cannot lawfully be excluded.

13. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Quotes.fm and its operators, contributors, service providers, and licensors will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, goodwill, revenue, or opportunity, arising from or related to the Service or these Terms. Where liability cannot be excluded, it will be limited to the greater of the amount you paid to Quotes.fm for the Service during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or US$100.

These limitations apply only to the extent permitted by applicable law and do not limit liability that cannot legally be limited, including liability for fraud, willful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by negligence where such exclusions are prohibited.

14. Changes to these Terms and general provisions

We may update these Terms to reflect changes to the Service, our practices, or legal requirements. We will post the revised Terms here and update the date above. Material changes will receive additional notice when reasonably appropriate. Your continued use after updated Terms take effect constitutes acceptance to the extent permitted by law.

These Terms and the Privacy Policy form the entire agreement between you and Quotes.fm concerning the Service, except for any separate written agreement that expressly applies. If a provision is found unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum permissible extent and the remaining provisions will remain in effect. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a reorganization, transfer of the Service, or operation by a successor. Mandatory rights and protections under the law where you live remain unaffected.
